Good dental health as an adult starts during childhood. To help your child establish good dental habits for life, start by cleaning his or her gums gently with a washcloth or moist gauze to get him or her used to the feeling before any teeth even appear. As soon as your child gets a tooth, he or she is at risk for tooth decay, so start brushing right away. Visits to the family dentist should start no later than your child’s first birthday, so he or she becomes accustomed to dental care. You are your child’s example for oral health, so be sure to care for your own teeth and to see the family dentist regularly yourself.
